Ford has delivered the seventh generation of its iconic pony car. This generation has a slightly tweaked exterior, engines, and interior, but it remains immediately identifiable as a Mustang.

For 2024, Ford introduces the seventh generation of its evergreen pony car but has retained much of the previous generation's DNA. The new Mustang sits on the same chassis and uses the same engines, with minor tweaks here and there. 

The exterior design of the car gets new angular lines. The car sits nicely on the road and has a purposeful stance. The large grille harks back to earlier generations, and the concave-shaped taillights are reminiscent of the 1967 model. The Premium also gets a hood extractor, and the GT has its "5.0" fender badging. The grille has larger openings, and the front splitter has been redesigned. 

The Mustang still carries its engine in the front and drives off the rear wheels. The motor is the same as the previous generation 5.0-litre Coyote V8, but the power has been boosted to 480 horsepower and the torque to 415 lb-ft. If you take the active-valve exhaust option, this power is upped again to 486 horsepower and 418 lb-ft torque.

Customers can choose from a 10-speed automatic transmission with a paddle shift or a six-speed manual box. In the manual option, the clutch is smooth and selecting the right gear is simple. There are options to use paddle shifters, which speed up changing gear, especially when letting this pony gallop.

Trims

The 2024 Mustang GT Premium comes in two trims. The first is the Mustang GT Premium Fastback, which costs $56,595*. The second model is the Mustang GT Premium Convertible, which costs $62,395*.

Significant upgrades to the interior gadgetry in the new Mustang have been made. The 13.2-inch infotainment screen extends from the instrument cluster toward the centre of the dash. Running Ford's Sync 4 software, this panel includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with voice commands via Amazon's Alexa or Ford Streaming. Another standard feature is Ford's Power-Up capability, allowing internet-based software updates and vehicle functionality.

Interior Comfort and Cargo Space 

As Ford describes it, the new interior has been redesigned with "jet fighter inspiration." The cabin is extremely comfortable with great seats, and the Fastback has the option of Recaro seats. The seats come cloth-trimmed as standard, but there’s an option to have leather seats with colour-coded accents. 

The driver is gifted a 12.4-inch instrument cluster that’s customizable both for the information to be displayed and the colour choices. 

The rear seat has a 50/50 split, giving extra space to load longer items. The Mustang has excellent cargo space for a performance car. The Fastback has 13.4 cubic feet of cargo space, and the Convertible has 11.4 cubic feet. Significantly, the cargo space isn’t affected when the roof is folded.

A fun addition is the Remote Rev button on the key fob. Press it, and the engine will rev while you stand outside the car to appreciate the throaty roar. 

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

The Mustang comes equipped with a wide range of safety features. While the NHTSA or the IIHS has yet to test the 2024 Mustang, the 2023 Mustang had five-star and Good ratings, and there is no reason to think the 2024 model will be any different.

The driver assistance features include:

  • Collision avoidance.
  • Lane-keeping assist.
  • Parking sensors at the front and rear.
  • A rear-view camera.

Standard on the Mustang is the Ford Co-Pilot360 package, which features adaptive cruise control, lane management, and evasive steering assistance. A new feature is Active Pothole Mitigation, which is part of the Performance Pack.
