2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Vs 2022 Rivian R1T

A new war is brewing, and the battle is just about to begin. It is not a clash that we are used to because the shift from combustion engine power is transitioning to electric power. As the first two automotive manufacturers are preparing to launch electric pickup trucks, the industry and truck enthusiasts are paying close attention. Ford and Rivian will be launching their electric pickup trucks next year; however, we need to keep in mind that these are two different trucks even though they share their power source.

At Riverview Ford, we are thrilled for the arrival of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, Ford's first EV truck. The F-150 has been Canada's best-selling truck for decades, and from the looks of what's coming, it will have no problems retaining its title. The announcement of the 2022 Rivian R1T has sent shockwaves through the industry and promises to be revolutionary. So it only makes sense to put these two EV trucks head to head and find out which one comes out on top. And with the arrival of the Ford Maverick, Ford is ready to take on just about anyone.

Exterior Comparison

The 2022 F-150 offers up what automotive consumers have loved about the current generation truck. A rugged yet beautiful design language that is one of the best-looking trucks in the segment. It is undeniably an F-150 with its shared body panels with its gasoline brother. However, the front grille, headlights, and taillights are redesigned for the Lightning. A new optional LED light bar upfront and at the rear looks fantastic when the sun goes down. Consumers will have the option of three different wheel sizes; 18", 20", and 22" aluminum-alloy wheels.

The Rivian, on the other hand, has a truly unconventional exterior design; since it doesn't have the storied history of the F-150, Rivian designers started from scratch. The Rivian is definitely a mid-size truck in terms of its size and doesn't offer the bed size the F-150 features. It does, however, feature LED lights with a pretty simple front and rear end.

Range and Charging Times

The F-150 is a full-size pickup truck, while the Rivian is in the mid-size segment. They will both boast impressive range numbers; the F-150 will arrive with two range options. The standard range battery will offer approximately 370 km and the extended range battery approximately 480 km. Either way you look at it, for a full-size pickup truck, these numbers are exceptional. In terms of charging, owners will have the chance to charge the Lightning via an industry-standard J1772 charger or DC fast-charging at a public charging station. Time will range from 8 hours to just 41 minutes for a 15% to 80%.

The Rivian also promises a 480 km range and quick acceleration. Compared to the F-150, it would be expected that the Rivian would have a longer range because it is a smaller truck with less capability; however, we are left wanting more.

Technology and Capability

The F-150 will feature all of the same technology and driver-assist options found on the gas-powered F-150 and then some. Pro Power On Board is an amazing feature that will give drivers an available 9.6 kWh of usual power, while Intelligence Back-Up Power will be used to power your home for up to 3 days. This is the best F-150 ever with features that the Rivian just can't compare with. It will also be able to tow up to 10,000 lbs

The Rivian, on the other hand, will also feature driver assistance technologies and towing capabilities that are similar to the F-150 but leaves out some of the new and innovative technology.
